In Meskheti, there are numerous monuments of historical significance. Here you can find the rock-hewn monastery complex at Jolda dating back to the 8-9th centuries. Of special interest are the caves with its stone gate at the village of Gelsunda. The huge and ever-present volcanic mountains looming in the background present an awesome sight.

A Day Trip: The tour starts at the ruins of an old caravanserai on the side of a road. The road traverses the Joldi Bridge and eventually leads the monastery complex at Joldi. The trip continues on toward the village of Pia on the other side of the mountain. A pass provides easy access and there are breathtaking views of these volcanic mountains and stony landscapes. In the village Pia, there are churches dating back to the 9th and 10th centuries and an ancient cemetery. The tour ends at the Gelsunda Caves with their unique stones doors.
